Tooth Extractions

If you are experiencing extreme tooth pain, if there is a large amount of decay in the tooth, or if a third molar is impacted, a tooth extraction may be required. Our Springfield VA office accepts emergency patients for evaluations for possible extractions.

When you come to Sonrisas and Smiles Dental Care for a consultation for tooth pain, we will take x-ray images of your mouth, and Dr. Aguilar-Garcia will evaluate and discuss different treatment options with you. In some situations where a tooth cannot be restored or saved through a root canal or other treatments, extraction might be necessary. Tooth extractions can be performed by professional surgeons (oral and maxillofacial surgeons) or a dentist.

Tooth Extraction in Springfield, VA

If you decide to move forward with the tooth extraction, you will be given a local anesthetic to numb the area surrounding the tooth. Dr. Aguilar-Garcia uses a specialized technique to deliver the anesthetic so that patients barely feel the needle prick, and don’t feel any pain during the procedure.

After we have removed the tooth, you can bite down on gauze to stop the bleeding. We will discuss possible options to replace the removed tooth with an implant, dentures, or a bridge. We make the procedure as easy and pain-free as possible for you. Our staff will provide you with instructions for caring for your mouth and the sutures after the procedure is finished.

Some patients ask about options for sedation or going to sleep. Dr. Aguilar-Garcia performs lots of extractions without putting patients to sleep, as he believes the risks outweigh the benefits in many cases. If patients would like to be put to sleep, we work with several oral surgeons in the area that we can refer you to.

Wisdom Teeth Removal

One of the most common tooth extraction procedures is wisdom teeth removal. Wisdom teeth can have a negative impact on your oral health if your jaw is not big enough to hold them. This can cause your other teeth to be misaligned and damage your bite. When the third molars don’t emerge, it can cause the roots of your other teeth to crowd and misalign as well.

After Dr. Aguilar-Garcia takes an X-ray of your jaw and wisdom teeth, he will make a determination on whether or not they should be removed. We recommend getting your wisdom teeth removed as soon as possible if they are causing an issue.

Patients typically have their wisdom teeth removed in their late teens or early twenties, when the roots of their teeth haven’t formed completely. You might have some anxiety about having your wisdom teeth removed, but Dr. Aguilar-Garcia and the Sonrisas and Smiles team make the entire process as safe and relaxing as possible, so you have nothing to worry about.
