Dental Implants

Dental implants placed in our in Springfield, VA office will help preserve your natural smile, restore your chewing ability, and save your surrounding teeth from growing in crooked due to the gaps.

What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are made from titanium posts that are anchored into the jawbone. After the surgical site has healed, we attach a crown as a replacement tooth that resembles a natural tooth onto the metal post. Your new implant will blend right in with the rest of your smile and look completely natural. Dental implants are an excellent option for people who want a long term solution for missing teeth, but don’t want dental bridges or other appliances that require extra maintenance.

Benefits of Dental Implants

Dental implants have become a very popular solution for patients with missing teeth. They solve several of the issues patients experience with other options such as dentures or bridges. They don’t require you to restrict your diet or have additional maintenance like dentures. They also don’t use surrounding teeth in order to be set like a dental bridge. Implants allow you to live normally without having to completely alter your lifestyle.

Some of the other benefits of getting dental implants include:

  • You will get rid of the gaps caused by missing teeth
  • You can experience less discomfort
  • It will become easier for you to chew food and speak
  • They are a long-term solution for missing teeth

The Dental Implant Process

The placement of dental implants is a months-long process, but this is deliberately done to ensure the overall effectiveness and stability of the implant. By taking time with the consultation, surgery, and recovery process, patients will reap the benefits of dental implants in the long run with fewer complications.

The first step of the process is a consultation with Dr. Aguilar-Garcia. During this consultation, an evaluation of your dental health is performed to assess whether or not you are a candidate for dental implants. This assessment will include an examination of the health of your gums as well as the condition of your jawbone. In some cases, it may be necessary to perform a grafting or augmentation surgery to build up sufficient bone density or gum tissue.

If you are ready to move forward with treatment, we will take a CBCT scan, which is a 3 dimensional xray of your mouth to determine bone level and density, and help Dr. Aguilar-Garcia precisely place the implant.

The Oral Surgery

If you are a good candidate for dental implants, the next step of the process will be the oral surgery. Dr. Aguilar-Garcia will use topical and local anesthesia to make the procedure pain-free. During the surgery itself, the dental implant will be anchored to your jawbone and gum tissue. Patients will be given detailed instructions for post-operative care, and a follow-up call the next day to see how they are doing. Most patients are able to return to work the following day, and resume intense exercise or heavy lifting within two to three days.

Patients will return after two weeks, and again at regular intervals for x-rays to determine how the implant is anchoring to the bone.

The Healing and Recovery Period

This step in the dental implant process may be the most crucial. While patients will be up and about not long after surgery, the healing and recovery process for dental implants typically takes between three to six months, and sometimes even up to a year. This is because a process known as osseointegration, the process by which the dental implants will fuse with the jawbone and gum tissue, needs to take place. Once the dental implants are properly joined with your bone and gum tissue, they will be able to hold dental restorations in place as if they were natural tooth roots. It is imperative that this healing process not be rushed or sped up.

Once osseointegration is complete, patients will return to Dr. Aguilar-Garcia to get a permanent dental restoration. The dental crowns will be crafted in a dental lab and will look as natural as possible, blending seamlessly with your existing teeth. This new tooth will look and feel like a natural tooth, and you will enjoy eating your favorite foods again. The restoration process will take three visits, with the implant uncovered in one visit, at the next visit impressions will be taken for the crown, and at the final visit, the crown will be placed in the implant.
