Dental fillings are used to fix teeth that are cracked, fractured, decayed, and have cavities. We remove the decayed/damaged part of the tooth and fill it with a composite filling. There are a variety of different materials that can be used for fillings, and there are pros and cons to each.
When you come in for your dental visit, we will go over the different options you have and give you our recommendation. The two most popular options are tooth colored composite fillings and silver amalgam fillings (traditional metal fillings). Many patients prefer composite fillings because they are more discreet and blend in with your natural tooth color.
Composite fillings are not permanent, so you may need to replace them eventually. However, they are very durable and can last for years.
When Are Composite Fillings Needed?
The most common reasons why people get composite fillings are:
● A tooth (or teeth) is worn down
● There is a small space/gap between two teeth
● Tooth decay
● A chipped tooth
Composite Fillings In Springfield VA
Our process for placing composite fillings is very simple and convenient. The entire procedure can usually be done in a single appointment, depending on how many teeth are being treated and other factors. First, we numb the area to minimize your discomfort. Then we will carefully remove any decay and clean the space thoroughly prior to placing the filling.
If the tooth has decay close to the root, we will apply medication for extra protection. Then we place the composite filling, shape it to your tooth, and polish it so that it looks new again. When the filling is first placed, your tooth might be a little more sensitive than usual to hot and cold temperatures. After a while, the sensation should go away. Dr. Aguilar-Garcia will also give you instructions on how to properly care for your tooth (or teeth) after the procedure.
